Improving Infant Health, "Why Safe Sleep Matters" Stories

Indiana faced an alarmingly high infant mortality rate of 8.9 deaths per 1,000 live births between 2016 and 2020, surpassing both state and national averages.  In response to these high rates of infant mortality, several partners in Cass County, Indiana worked with Purdue to create evidence-based, educational stories on safe infant sleep practices, available in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole.

These courses will be disseminated through various channels, including in-home visits, public health departments, workplace televisions, and hospital discharge procedures. This innovative approach aims to enhance health literacy and reduce infant mortality among marginalized populations by eliminating barriers to information access and ensuring content relevance for Hispanic and Haitian communities.

If your organization would like to consider using the “Why Safe Sleep Matters” educational stories within your community to help new moms and families understand the importance of safe sleep practices for babies, please fill out our contact form so we can collaborate and provide you access to our comprehensive “Why Safe Sleep Matters” curriculum.
